The University of Paris 8 has cancelled a scheduled anti-Israel conference. In a statement released on 17 February after receiving complaints from concerned institutions including the leadership of France’s jewish community,  the University noted that the title of the conference – “Israel: an apartheid state?” – was “of a strongly polemical character”, and expressed its fear there could be a serious risk posed to the respect of the principle of neutrality of the public service and to public order if the event scheduled for 27 and 28 February went ahead. The University offered to grant the organizers  premises if a genuine study day was organized with a public debate, and a variety of opinions, something which was obviously not the aim the conference organizers.
